Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll

I'd been itching to get to either Norwick or Cullivoe to see the Hornemann's Arctic Redpolls that were discovered last week so I got up at stupid o' clock on Sunday morning and spent a few hours at Cullivoe enjoying this absolutely stunning bird in a force 8 gale. They would have felt quite at home here yesterday - we had the first snow of the autumn!

As the bird spent a fair bit of its time feeding on seed heads in the school playground at Cullivoe Primary, I e mailed up a pic to Jane Walker who sent this amazing picture back - the kiddies had put the image up on the entrance door to the playground and Jane tells me they were looking out for it all day. Great stuff!
