Finland & Norway Winter Pho-tour 2010

I'm currently in the process of finalising the arrangements for the 2010 winter trip to Finland and Norway and should have dates and itineraries finalised in the next couple of weeks. I will be offering an extension to photograph Golden Eagles and there may also be opportunities with Black Grouse at a 'lek' site - in snow! The dates will be announced here and also at the Shetland Wildlife site as soon as we have finalised the plans. If you are interested in joining this unique trip, please e mail me and include a daytime contact telephone number and postal address. Scroll down this page to see how good the photo opportunities are!

Too Many Gigs..

No time for any Shetland-based photography as I'm currently catching up on work and ploughing through the many hundreds of images taken on the Finland and Norway trip, before heading out to Colorado. Here are a few more 'keepers' from stage one of editing...

More Great Greys

Some more Great Grey Owls from Saturday! For an outstanding 10 days photography, sincere thanks to our guests Nigel & Kay, Robert & Sue, Mick, Jim and Mark. Sincere thanks also to my colleagues and friends in Finland: Harri Taavetti, Jari Peltomaki, Jari Wilenius and Leena Laitinen.

The lack of flowing water in Kuusamo at this time of year means that Dippers are found in just a few isolated sites.

Woodland Birds

Spent the day photographing some of the commoner forest denizens - Siberian Jay, Siberian Tit, Willow Tit and Great Spotted Woodpeckers.

Golden Eagles

A total of 18 hours in a hide over two days resulted in just three minutes of activity at the bait. Thats wildlife photography for you!

Great Grey Owl

After leaving Varangar and Lapland we are now planning to photograph Golden Eagles just west of the Russian border. On the way we spent an afternoon photographing this beautiful and very obliging Great Grey Owl near Tornio. Although I have seen and photographed several Great Grey Owls in spring, I have never had the opportunity to photograph a hunting bird in winter. So this was a very special moment for me and one I had waited an awful long time for!

Killers & Steller's

Our morning boat trip to Hornoya Island had us heading out to look for the huge King Eider flocks but things soon changed when a pod of 6 - 8 Killer Whales appeared alongside us! We had incredible views of the animals which included one tiny calf estimated to be just 4 - 5 feet long. The rest of the day was predominantly spent concentrating on getting some nice portraits of Steller's Eiders.
