Summer 2009 Pho-tours

As well as winter pho-tours, Shetland Wildlife also offers bespoke photographic solutions for the amateur and pro-photographer. Although we are already pretty much booked out for the summer we do have a few days spare here and there so if you have any 'gaps' in your collection, take advantage of our expert local knowledge and let us assist you in getting the images YOU want! Some of the best photographic opportunities are right here on our own doorstep in the south Mainland and we can also arrange packages to the north isles of Fetlar, Yell and Unst. We can put together a superb two or three day itinerary - longer if required - to photograph some of the following subjects in the following regions:

SOUTH MAINLAND
  • Storm Petrels (on an exclusive night time trip to Mousa Broch)

  • Puffin - on cliffs and in flight
  • Golden Plover - on breeding grounds
  • Whimbrel - on breeding grounds

NORTH ISLES

  • Red-necked Phalarope - on feeding loch
  • Red-throated Diver - on non-breeding lochs
  • Great Skua - on breeding grounds
  • Arctic Skua - on breeding grounds
  • Arctic Tern - on breeding grounds
  • Dunlin - on breeding grounds
  • Redshank - on breeding grounds
  • Golden Plover - on breeding grounds
  • Ringed Plover - on breeding grounds
  • Oystercatcher - on breeding grounds
  • Snipe - on breeding grounds
  • Curlew - on breeding grounds
  • Whimbrel - on breeding grounds
  • Puffin - on cliffs and in flight PLUS back-lit & sunset shots!
  • Gannet - on cliffs and in flight

As your guide, I'll hopefully make you a more proficient photographer by showing how to:

  • Approach birds and set up your shots
  • Design the image - learn composition, pose, perspective and background
  • See and work with different lighting conditions
  • Understand exposure - we'll cover all metering techniques and what to use when
  • Study sharpness and long lens technique with converters and extension tubes
  • Improve your action and flight photography technique
  • Maximise your equipment: show you when and how to use what you've got
  • Use your flash - and remove your fears! I'll cover both fill-flash and main-flash
  • Learn simple digital darkroom basics with tips, techniques and much more!

To allow maximum time with subjects and to induce as much photographic quality from your subject we would advise prospective photographers to shortlist three to five species as their key targets and to also choose a secondary shortlist of material that may be not so critical! This will help us enormously to plan a trip around your requirements and make the most of the time we spend in the field.

Interested? Please provide an idea of what subjects you'd like to tackle and I'll provide a guideline itinerary and a price. You can e mail this to Shetland Wildlife or give me a call direct at the office on 01950 422483.
