Killer Whales

Our Shetland Wildlife group found a pod of Killer Whales off Sumburgh Head this morning. Martin and I could not have been further away than the north Mainland, where we were photographing a summer plumaged Great Northern Diver and sound recording another Marsh Warbler which we discovered at Voe. Click below for 30 seconds or so of this superb songster.

We headed south and spent all afternoon and early evening following the pod from land. Here are a few fresh out the card...

A selection of Bonxie (Great Skua) images from the 13 - 20 June Focus on Shetland trip. During our time on the island of Unst, we concentrated on getting images of the birds back-lit, at sunset and at ground level. Thanks to Gary & Karen, Kevin & Glynnys, Stefanie, Giancarlo & Dennis for another great week with the camera!

Click below to hear a two minute recording of Bonxies at a non-breeding 'club' site on Unst:

Marsh Warbler

I've spent the last few mornings sound recording and photographing a very showy Marsh Warbler at Hoswick. This bird might be lacking in looks, but its song is exquisite...

Stormy Sessions

Another Shetland Wildlife 'Focus on Shetland' trip started on Saturday, so it was straight to work on seabirds, which included a 'dusk to dawn' session on Sunday night with Storm Petrels. For a brilliant week from 6 - 13 June my special thanks to Gordon & Judith, Joan, Garth, John, Jenny & Sharon. I also managed some nice sound recordings of the birds 'singing' from the broch:

Spent the afternoon working for a Radio 4 broadcast with Marc 'Lard' Riley from Radio 6, Guy Garvey from Elbow and Martin Noble from British Sea Power.

Moltoni's Subalpine Warbler

Just back from three days on Unst with the Shetland Wildlife 'Focus on Shetland' group. Awesome weather meant awesome photographic opportunities with seabirds and waders. I also managed a nice selection of images of the Moltoni's Subalpine Warbler in lovely low sunlight and also spent time sound recording the distinctive call. Click below to listen.

Postscript July 2009:

Many of my images made it to publication e.g Bird Watching below. Birding World also used the images plus sonograms for a five-page write up in their July 2009 edition.
