I turned 40 today and among the cards and presents was this rather unique creation from my fellow Canon aficionado Anja.

Oiseaux de Provence

Just back from a superb week in Provence guiding a birding holiday for Shetland Wildlife. An excellent and diverse selection of species included Wallcreeper, Alpine Accentor, Black Woodpecker, Citril Finch, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Little Bustard, Calandra Lark, Dartford & Sardinian Warblers, Bonelli's Eagle, Booted Eagle, Moustached Warbler, Penduline Tit, Black-necked Grebe, Night Heron and the famous Green Heron - back for its third consecutive winter! The trip will run again from 13 - 19 February 2010 and always proves to be very popular - all the details are here

Our visit to Provence attracted the attention of top flight food and travel writer Julie Mautner.

Check out her great site - and her feature on our trip - at The Provence Post

Long-taileds

A quick visit to the harbour before meetings produced some close Long-taileds.

Fieldfares

A few cm of snow sent birds scurrying to the damper and muddier margins so I spent the morning photographing ground-feeding Fieldfares.

Wednesday, 4 February 2009

A quick hour in the harbour this morning where there were plenty of close Eiders and big numbers of Fulmars. No 'true Blue' Fulmars among them though.

Ivory Gull...

Along with many other images, the February 2009 edition of Bird Watching magazine features my picture of the December 2008 Ivory Gull on their leading page for their UK Bird Sightings supplement. More pictures of this bird here
