More Focus on Shetland 2010 Images

I've just finished guiding three weeks of back-to-back Focus on Shetland photography trips. We tried to concentrate primarily on getting behaviour and birds-in-habitat images and a very small selection of my own work is presented below. Getting up at 4am - or going to bed at 4am some mornings - might not be every photographers cup of tea but to get the best images in the best light, it certainly pays dividend! Looking back, we pretty much had great weather throughout and the dawn starts at Noss seabird colonies were awesome. All three Storm Petrel photography trips went really well and everybody manged some great keepers. For making all three trips so enjoyable thanks to our guests Maurice, Pam, Steve & Niall, Derek, John & Lesley, Paul & Sue, Michelle & Alan, Pam & Charles, Renaud, Michael, Ken, Margaret & John & Norman & Margaret. In 2011 we will run three further Focus on Shetland holidays. Click here for details:

Paddyfield Warbler

This Paddyfield Warbler gave reasonably good views and photo opps for some of our groups at Grutness today. A great find for Craig Round and Co.

A quick update from the Focus on Shetland trip currently on Unst: this handsome female Dotterel was a lovely bird to find among a flock of Ringed Plovers whilst photographing waders and Fulmars along the shoreline of Baltasound.

Storm Petrels

A quick update - spent all last night (and most of this morning!) guiding the Focus on Shetland group for a Storm Petrel photography session. Our exclusive charter got us to the birds at 11pm and we finally got to bed around 4am when it was light! It was one of the best nights I've enjoyed photographing this superb little seabird and everybody in our group managed some great 'keepers'. The ability to control and lower the flash output direct from the 1D Mark IV is an awesome development and this now tried and tested method worked a treat. Here are a few fresh out of the camera...
